ABSTRACT:

The authors examine challenges confronting e-waste management in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. They utilize data collected through the use of questionnaires and in – depth interviews via a purposive sampling of waste disposal personnel, dealers, commercial operators and consumers of electronics in the University. The analysis is done using the Pearson correlation coefficient and chi-square. The results indicate that there is a positive and significant relationship between poor implementation of legislation and obsolete ICT equipment shipped into the country and being used within the University. The findings also show that e-waste is indiscriminately disposed and there is a low level of awareness among consumers about the hazards caused by indiscriminate dumping of e-wastes in the University. The authors conclude that e-waste is poorly managed in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
