KEYWORDS: THE CHALLENGES OF EFFECTIVE ADOPTION OF INFROMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN SOUTH-EAST NIGERIA
ABSTRACT:
The advent of information and communication technology (ICT) in Nigerian university libraries has created a new digital environment to disseminate and retrieve information to patrons. The descriptive survey method was adopted in the study and purposive sampling technique was used to select three federal universities in South-Eastern, geopolitical zone for the study. The population of the study comprised of 100 professional librarians in the selected universities. Out of 100 copies of questionnaire distributed, 80 copies were retrieved and used for data analysis. The study revealed that the sampled university libraries face different challenges towards effective adoption ofICTs. The challenges include unreliable power supply, inadequate funding, shortage of manpower, lack of information and computer literacy skills among library users and staff. The study concluded that information and computer literacy skills are vital for effective adoption ofICTs in libraries for better information service delivery and therefore recommended that library administrators should introduce and organize different ICT training programmes for both staff and students and the federal government should provide adequate funding for ICT adoption m university libraries.
