KEYWORDS: ECOTOXICOLOGICAL STUDY: AN ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT TOOL
ABSTRACT:
This short communication examines toxicological test as an environmental management tool. Toxicology examines the effects of chemical or physical agents on living organisms. Organisms can be exposed to the same toxic substance in different environmental media (air, water, soil, or food) and through different exposure routes (ingestion, inhalation, body contact). The effect could be acute or chronic (sublethal). The toxicity end point effects of contamination could be survival, growth, reproduction; behavioral changes and/or death in the organisms and these could be measured using the lethal concentration (LC50), which is the concentration that will kill 50% of the organisms exposed to the toxic substance. The Probit method of analysis is the statistical tool using in assessing the effect of the toxic substance against time and exposure duration. Environmental toxicity test is an important tool used to enhance the understanding of the chemical interactions between biota and environment. It is expected that ecotoxicology will mature into a complementary tool to unravel the emerging environmental toxicological problems.
