ABSTRACT:

The hunger for compelling, creative and purposive leadership, that capacity and will to rally men and women to a common purpose and the character that inspires confidence of the followers, is one of the universal cravings of our time. The paper looks at leadership from the perspective of the capacity of She leader to attain higher consciousness of the world around them and beyond and allowing that state of mind to guide them in the discharge of their duties. Beyond the definition and other discussions on leadership, the paper takes a studied look at the history, essence and efficacy of intelligent quotient (IQ), emotional intelligence (EQ) and the esoteric and relatively novel concept of spiritual intelligent (SQ) and espouse how SQ encompasses the other two intelligences and has the capacity of producing leaders whose attitude to governance, especially the inordinate acquisition of wealth and the megalomania that drives them into attempting to play God, would be minimized if not eliminated. The paper concludes that, given a leadership that is sufficiently imbued with SQ, govemment willbe more sensitive and responsive to the need of the people and consequently perform more effectively to the benefit of the generality of human society and to the glory of God. Here, the paper finally posits, lies the elixir for brain drain, the decay of social infrastructure, ever-elongating unemployment line, youth restiveness, social fragility, the pervading volatilityand countless other social malaise that constitute the insidious albatross of the Nigerian socioeconomic and political milieu.
