KEYWORDS: POPULATION CONTROL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA: LESSONS FROM CHINA'S EXPERIENCE.

ABSTRACT:

An uncontrolled population explosion reduces people's standard of living and enhances unemployment with its social, political and economic consequences, which are inimical to a country's economic development. It causes congestion in the area of housing, traffic, hospitals, schools etc, and exerts pressure on the limited social infrastructural facilities of a nation like Nigeria. The paper appraises China's population control policy and asserts that China's   effort in controlling population explosion has been successful. This success informs the basis for the recommendation that Nigeria would have an optimum and sustainable population when it takes a cue from the China's implementation strategies. The paper recommends that while government and government officials should be held responsible for fulfilling population plans in Nigeria, research on population science should be made with respect to family planning. The paper recommends that incentives should also be given to encourage those who abide by the family planning and population controlling laws and fines or relevant punishments should be spelled out for defaulters.
